3D data visualization tool with motion graphics sequence

The challenge

Ookla is a global leader in both fixed and mobile network testing and analysis. They have a variety of products that provide customers with more insights into the quality of their connections and services.

CLEVER°FRANKE was asked to showcase the quality and coverage of several Ookla products on a large display at their booth during the Mobile World Congress 2022. The visualizations had to impress and engage visitors, and trigger a follow-up conversation with the Ookla’s staff at the booth.

Ookla has three core products, for which we set out to create visualizations for the conference:

  • Speedtest - location-based data on internet speed
  • Downdetector -  real-time information about the status of various websites and services
  • Cell analytics - location-based 3D data on the signal strength and usage of cellular data

With the available data within the products, we started sketching and shaping a storyline for each one of them. We developed a storyboard and defined how to visually represent every product best. The booth contained multiple displays, from which the large curved LED display at the entrance would be the canvas for the product visualizations.


To make maximum use of the giant display, we’ve used three different perspectives that would give the visualization a cinematic ambience. Final visualizations show geographical connectivity data (countries, cities), but also network data for individual buildings.

The amounts and the type of data of all three products featured are different, therefore every product’s visualizations are unique.

To visualize speedtest data, we combined map visualization with a scorecard. The map gives an idea of the amount of data Ookla has, whilst the scorecard allows understanding of this abstract visualization and paints a clearer picture.

The status of real-time issues of various services has been visualized with an abstract circular component, and complemented with a KPI screen. Downdetector visualizations give information about global coverage and also local services.

Visualizations for cell analytics product data show data for a city, but also for a building. Rotating city visualization shows three metrics: signal strengths, user density, and data usage. Then the visualization zooms in and shows the same metrics for a 3D building.

Ookla’s goal was to engage with the audience through eye-catching visuals. By generating an extensive set of cinematic yet informative visualizations, we were able to take the viewer on a journey and showcase the depth and breadth of Ookla’s product data.

All the components and visualizations were built and developed with Unity, which enabled us to have a workflow of real-time visualizations. Animations are fed by current data and are constantly being updated on a large led display or in a video file for use in presentations or social media.

Placing Ookla's information in recognizable 3d environments made their information a tangible and relatable experience. The tool enables Ookla to use updated data and create customized visualization for specific situations, allowing them to use the motion sequences flexibly. Ultimately the tool brings a human touch to their data insights and helps customers better understand the power of Ookla's products and services.


For C°F the tool showcases the power of data in 3d environments. Taking it one step further, in real life with augmented reality (AR) technology, the tool could help us find the best spots in buildings to connect to the internet. Applying it to the immersive VR / metaverse space, it can help us have a better perspective and discuss the status of the connectivity in our world.

Working with CLEVER°FRANKE on content for our biggest shows has been a pleasure. Their team has given us a fresh new perspective in how we express stories in our data. Even with compressed timelines and shifting needs, CLEVER°FRANKE has delivered quality products.
