How online news articles paint our worldview
Inspired by our online sentiment tool TrendViz we experimented with different visualization techniques while maintaining data entries as entities. This means that the visual representations of these entities morph into different shapes depending on the selected visualization type. For example, in the ‘barchart’ view these entities are displayed as bars, while in the ‘circular’ view the entities are displayed as circles. We also added an audio dimension to enrich the overall experience of the data visualization.
The main challenge was to maintain a visual reference to the data’s entity for multiple visualization techniques as each technique uses a different kind of shape. Ultimately we created a prototype that achieves a smooth transition between various visualizations, while keeping MultiViz as a holistic and consistent visualization.
We’ve gained a multitude of new perspectives on data while exploring how to maintain a visual reference and still be able to visualize the same data entity in different techniques. This experiment also opens up possibilities for harnessing audio to create immersive visualizations.
