Recapturing a cycle race through data embroideries
How can GPS data be transformed into meaningful, personalized visual artifacts of endurance events?

Background

We created personalized data visualizations with the existing GPS data that we gathered from the Atlas Mountain Race 2020 that took place in Marrakesh. The aim is to recapture the unique story of each cyclist that is embedded in data, and translate this into personalized emblems.

What did we learn?

In this project we aspired to create a data driven design ready for production: a tangible embroidery patch. This created a technical challenge as it limited the resolution we could work with and the level of detail that can be shown. We used Processing to visualise the raw GPS data and reformat it and learned how to capture the richness of each ride in a single visual.

Ambitions

We want to have these visualizations stitched on embroideries which can be a personalized souvenir for cyclists after they complete the race. Through this experiment, we create new opportunities to define a new visual language of ephemeral objects through data. The way we look back at events and keep certain materials to remember things can be enriched by using existing data in new ways.
