How can MapboxGL and DeckGL be used together to create a guided 3D population visualization? We visualized the world’s 20 most populous cities blending storytelling with interactive exploration.

Background

The goal of this experiment was to understand how to combine MapboxGL with DeckGL 3D visualizations. We decided to use some world population data to highlight various cities all over the world. By scrolling the camera will zoom in on the top 20 cities and visualize its population. Please be aware the data is not always correct in terms of geo-location.

What did we learn?

The main challenge was to combine the map based visuals with a more guided approach. By scrolling up or down the map had to zoom and transition to a specific location rather than zooming on the map which you would expect from an interactive map. We decided to add this traditional map functionality in the final step to give the user the freedom to explore the different locations.

Ambitions

MapboxGL and DeckGL is an interesting combination and surely has potential to be used in future projects to create 3D map based data visualizations.
