How can an interactive, mobile-friendly visualization effectively represent Eurovision's historical data while maintaining the integrity of the original 2020 logo design?

Background

As the creators of the Eurovision logo for 2020/2021 in Rotterdam, we wanted to give viewers insight into the data and ideation process behind the design. The logo is comprised of blocks that represent the participating countries over the years so it offers a new way of exploring Eurovision’s history.

What did we learn?

We wanted to find an intuitive way to make a once static visualization interactive and mobile friendly. After playing around with different entrance animations and mobile layouts, we landed on a rotational wheel that is populated and rendered with the JavaScript package D3.

Ambitions

It allows users to dive into the the data behind 65 years of Eurovision and how it informed the design of the original 2020 Eurovision logo.
